Would You Like Paper or Plastic For a Quarter?

While President Barack Obama is pushing for cleaner, more efficient cars by possibly allowing California and other states to impose tougher auto emission standards on carmakers, the City of San Jose is also looking to be more environmentally friendly.

The City of San Jose is considering adopting an ordinance that would require all retail establishments to charge its customers a 25-cent fee for each disposable shopping bag (plastic and/or paper) provided.

If the ordinance is adopted and you don’t want to pay this fee, you have several options. One of them is purchasing a reusable cloth carrying bag already being offered at most retailers. These bags are normally sold at a very low price.

If you have an opinion about this ordinance or would like to learn more about it, attend one of the two public meetings that will be at the San Jose City Hall Council Chambers located at 200 E Santa Clara St, San Jose CA 95113.

At these meetings you can:

  • Learn about the proposed ordinance
  • Discover how you may be affected as a business owner and consumer
  • Ask questions and provide feedback

The first meeting is today Wednesday, January 28, 2009 between 2:00pm and 3:30pm.

The second meeting is Thursday, January 29, 2009 between 6:00pm and 7:30pm.
